Star in the Dust (Charles Hass, 1956)

The film opens with laborers discussing where best to place the scaffold upon which Sam Hall (Richard Boone) will hang for the murder of three farmers. Throughout the film the “Music Man,” played by Terry Glikyson, sings the ballad “Sam Hall”  … blast his eyes. It is an affective device, perhaps not as resonate as the ballad in High Noon or the one sang in Rancho Notorious, but it held my attention. That said, it is nothing to what Tex Ritter does with the song. Go here to learn where Johnny Cash got all his moves and to hear Ritter sing these lines:

I killed a man they said, so they said

I killed a man they said,

And I smashed in his head

I left him laying dead, blast his eyes
